Post-doctoral Research Associate (social / environmental science)

starting at the earliest possible date for a duration of three years. The post is situated within the ERA-NET project
MULTAGRI − "Rural development through governance of multifunctional agricultural land use",
work package 5: "Governance challenges to encourage landscape-scale uptake
of appropriate management actions".
The collaborative project MULTAGRI, involving seven partner organisations from four European countries, aims to assess policy instruments that target the multiple functions provided by agriculture, by harnessing landscape and biological diversity as assets. Governance promoting multifunctional agricultural landscapes has the potential to increase the production of public goods while also promoting sustainable agricultural production, thereby sustaining rural economies in a changing world. Work package 5, led by Leuphana University Lüneburg, will assess the multi-level governance system under which European farmers operate; assess the governance institutions currently at work, including collaborative networks; assess how and why farmers choose to adopt specific management actions at farm and landscape scale, including barriers to coordinating management actions; and assess the potential of governance innovations to foster multifunctional agriculture and encourage landscape-scale uptake of appropriate management actions.

Tasks and responsibilities of the successful candidate will include:
Project management (Leuphana work package 5);
Collaboration with project partners, including travel to and organisation of project meetings;
Conceptual and empirical research (as outlined above / work package 5);
Organisation of stakeholder workshops in Germany, France and Sweden;
Qualitative interviews with stakeholders in the farming sector; and
Preparation of journal articles and reports.
The successful candidate should have:
A PhD in the social sciences (e.g. political science, planning, human geography) and/or interdisciplinary environmental (social) sciences, or in a related field.
Desired personal attributes include (please provide evidence for each of these in 100-200 words):
Project management skills, demonstrated capability of leadership, and ability to work independently;
Communication skills (written and oral);
Experience with (qualitative) interviews with a diverse range of stakeholders;
Experience with one or more of the following: actor (network) analysis; policy analysis of multi-level systems; the interface of environmental and agricultural policy; and
Language skills in German, France and/or Swedish will be beneficial.
