The Research Group "Metabolic and Genetic Regulation of Ageing" headed by Dr. Martin Denzel is looking for a full time
Postdoctoral Research Fellow (m/f)
(job code 12/2014)
In the newly established research group "Metabolic and Genetic Regulation of Ageing" we are interested in protein quality control in the context of ageing. Protein homeostasis is required for healthy life, and a process that becomes defective early during ageing. Defects in protein quality control can lead to age-related diseases, such as neurodegeneration. It is a long-term goal of the lab to understand the mechanisms of protein quality control, to find novel ways to improve protein surveillance, and to harness this knowledge to counter age related diseases. To this end, we use forward genetic approaches in the nematode C. elegans, and then investigate new biological mechanisms in cultured mammalian cells, as well as in mice. Within this line of research, we have recently found that elevation of an endogenous metabolite can extend lifespan in the nematode (Denzel and Storm et al., Cell 2014). This particular research project will focus on protein quality control in mammals. We apply a multidisciplinary approach combining, genetics, genomics, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, imaging and mammalian in vivo experiments in order to understand the biology of ageing and age-related disease. We seek highly motivated, ambitious, and talented scientists to help setting up an enthusiastic and collaborative team in an outstanding scientific environment. This post is available from the 1st of September 2014.
Qualifications
The successful applicant will hold a Ph.D. in a relevant research area such as biology, molecular biology, genetics or biochemistry and have a strong track record of accomplishment. The applicant should have a keen interest in the biology of ageing and protein homeostasis, and excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience with tissue culture and mouse in vivo experiments are essential. Familiarity with enzyme kinetic assays is a plus, but not essential. The working language is English; knowledge of the German language is not required.
Research Environment
The Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing was founded in 2008 for the purpose of understanding fundamental mechanisms of healthy ageing. It is part of a broad network of research institutions in the Cologne-Bonn area dedicated to research on ageing and age-related disease, constituting a vibrant and collaborative environment for research. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and excellent core facilities, to which the successful candidate would have access, the institute provides outstanding research opportunities for its scientists. The Institute hosts employees from 23 nations, and will grow to 350 members in the new building.
The employment contract is based on contracts for the civil service (TVöD-Bund, Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst) will initially be time limited. The Max Planck Society is committed to employ more disabled individuals and especially encourages them to apply.
The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and especially encourages them to apply.
To apply, upload a pdf-file (job code 12/2014) containing a one-page letter with a personal statement describing your scientific accomplishments and interests, your CV and bibliography, contact information for 3 references, all in a single pdf-file on our application website
Informal inquiries are very welcome and should be sent to Martin.Denzel@age.mpg.de. For further information about the Institute see www.age.mpg.de.
Are you interested?
Then please upload your complete application documents in electronic form as one single PDF-document via our online application platform/website http://www.age.mpg.de/career/open-positions/. Deadline for applications is 21.08.2014.
