Postdoctoral Research Position in Electrochemical Energy Systems Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems

Effective immediately, a postdoctoral research position in the general area of electrochemical energy systems is available in the group of Professor Dr.-Ing. Kai Sundmacher, Director of the Process Systems Engineering Department at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems (MPIDCTS) in Magdeburg, Germany (http://www.mpi-magdeburg.mpg.de/pse). The task of the researcher is to investigate and optimize the materials and operating conditions of Proton Electrolyte Membrane Electrolysers (PEMEL) to be used for future hydrogen production from renewable energy. The position will be funded by the recently established MaxNet Energy, a research network of seven Max Planck Institutes (MPI) which aims to investigate the reaction and transport mechanisms at the PEMEL electrodes.

While several network partners will focus on the material aspects, the primary contribution of the Sundmacher group at MPI-DCTS will be to analyse the systemic behaviour and performance of porous support structures, catalysts, and membrane materials in a whole-cell setup. The project will involve experimental and modelling components. The experimental activities will include the preparation of membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) from advanced materials, the electrochemical characterization of MEA (via CV, EIS etc.), the operation of an existing lab-scale PEMEL, and the post mortem analysis of PEMEL components (via SEM, AFM etc.). The modelling activities will cover the formulation and numerical simulation of advanced PEMEL system models to be used for the interpretation of steady state current-voltage curves and EIS spectra as well as for the prediction of the dynamic response behaviour of water electrolysers operated under fluctuating input of renewable energy.

The successful applicant has a strong background in electrochemical process engineering or in applied elec­tro­che­mistry, and has already shown scientific excellence and leadership in her/his PhD project. Excellent English language skills are very important, too. It is expected that the applicant will make original scientific contributions worthy of pu­bli­cation in the archival literature.
