Technology, Policy and Management
The Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management contributes to sustainable solutions for technical challenges in society by combining the insights from engineering with the humanities and the social sciences.

Designing for participation in today's networked society is one of the main challenges in system design. This challenge is central to the “Governance and Participation” research programme within the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management (TPM) at TU Delft. Understanding, modelling and designing the dynamics of participatory, socio-technical systems are the core of this programme. Real-time modelling and distributed simulation of coordination in large-scale, distributed environments provide insights into the dynamics of such systems.

The design and management of participatory systems is the focus of Systems Engineering's research programme (see www.participatorysystems.org). Participatory systems are socio-technical systems that enable and support participation in today's networked society in which realities merge. Distributed energy markets, the Smart Grid, dynamic supply chain management, and crisis/emergency management are examples of such systems. The increasing dynamics, enabled by communication technology, require the ability to anticipate and respond flexibly to emergent phenomena, requiring new models of systems dispersed in time and location.

Job description
Research focuses on the development of distributed simulation methods, techniques, and environments to analyse, design and implement distributed dynamic systems, including interactive gaming.
Participatory system design requires truly distributed models, concepts and tools, involving both first order dynamics (validly modelling the dynamics within the system), second order dynamics (modelling the evolution of the system over time), and combinations thereof.
Within the Systems Engineering section, both the multi-formalism, distributed, object-oriented DSOL simulation framework and the distributed multi-agent platform AgentScape are used for research and for system design.
A Tenure Track, a process leading up to a permanent appointment with the prospect of becoming an Associate or full Professor, offers young, talented academics a clear and attractive career path. During the Tenure Track, you will have the opportunity to develop into an internationally acknowledged and recognised academic. We offer a structured career and personal development programme designed to offer individual academics as much support as possible. For more information about the Tenure Track and the personal development programme, please visit www.tudelft.nl/tenuretrack.

Requirements
Applicants should have the following qualifications:
1. A background in technical, mathematical, computer or design sciences, with strong computer science and mathematical skills;
2. Excellent scientific credentials, i.e. a PhD, excellent publications and preferably experience as a post-doc;
3. Experience in the development and use of continuous and discrete models and simulation environments for complex system design;
4. Demonstrated appreciation and ability to work in an academic, interdisciplinary environment with technical and social scientists;
5. Excellent didactic qualities and experience in multidisciplinary teaching programmes;
6. A track record of attracting external funding;
7. A strong (international) network within the academic, industrial and national and international governmental organisations.

Conditions of employment
TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of assembling a customised compensation and benefits package (the 'IKA').
