The Forum for Interdisciplinary Religious Studies (FIRSt) at the University of Göttingen is currently inviting applications for the positions of
4 x two-year postdoctoral researchers
(Salary group 13 TV-L, 39,8h/week, 2 years)
within the research priority area “The Making and Unmaking of the Religious”, funded by the Ministry for Science and Culture of the State of Lower Saxony. The positions are to be filled starting January 1st, 2016 until December 31st, 2017.
The FIRSt (http://www.uni-goettingen.de/firef) provides a platform for research activities in the comparative study of religion on the Göttingen Campus (www.goettingen-campus.de). It is currently developing an interdisciplinary research priority area which studies discursive, institutional and materially mediated practices that constitute the religious field by (a) drawing boundaries of the religious; (b) constructing religious differences; and (c) shaping continuity and change of religious traditions. These practices are systematically studied, in historical and cross-cultural comparative perspective, by focusing on research topics such as “Semantics of objects, bodies and spaces”, “Knowledge production, transmission and reception”, and “Regulating diversity: States, laws, and movements”.
The 4 post-docs are to conduct innovative and original research within the framework of FIRSt. The 4 post-doc positions shall focus on one of the above-mentioned practices of (un)making the religious (a, b, c), respectively, or focus on the research topic “Semantics of objects, bodies and spaces”.
FIRSt is looking for excellent researchers, holding a PhD in any relevant discipline, having a solid publication record in the study of religion, and being interested in interdisciplinary collaboration. Applications are open in terms of historical periods, regional foci, and methodological approach. Fluency in English is required, proficiency in German is helpful but not mandatory.
The 4 post-docs will be assigned mentors on the Göttingen Campus who will ensure their disciplinary integration and further career development; they will also profit from post-doc career development activities regularly organized by the Lichtenberg Kolleg, the university’s Institute of Advanced Study.
