Postdoctoral Research Associate

University of Exeter
The University of Exeter is a Russell Group University in the top one percent of institutions globally. In the last few years we have invested strategically to deliver more than £350 million worth of new facilities across our campuses with plans for another £330 million of investment. The Living Systems Institute (LSI) is a major new initiative designed to promote interdisciplinary research that transcends the boundaries of mathematics, engineering and the biological, medical and physical sciences. The College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences now wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to be based in the Living Systems Institute to support the research of Professor Frank Vollmer. This position is available from 1 December 2016 for a fixed term period of three years.

Living Systems Institute
Postdoctoral Research Associate (Ref. P54238)
The starting salary will be from £28,452 to £32,958 on Grade E, depending on qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate will work on a research project involving the application and further development of a novel, optical single molecule biosensing technique, combining optical microcavities (whispering gallery mode resonators) with nanoplasmonic structures for detecting and analysing single biomolecules, advancing the capabilities of the single molecule biosensor platform for detecting enzyme activity, tracking reaction kinetics, and monitoring structural change in proteins. This project will also include combining the label-free platform with label-based optical methods such as single molecule FRET and advancing the nanoplasmonic substructures and their assembly for detection with extreme sensitivity.

Applicants will possess a PhD in physics, optics, electrical engineering, bioengineering or a related discipline and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. The successful candidate will be a talented experimentalist, ideally with experience of optical micocavities, plasmonics, biosensing as well as surface chemistry. Experience with optical single molecule techniques, familiarity with LabView for data acquisition and programming skills is essential. Some familiarity with micro and nanofabrication as well as experience with biochemistry and biophysics is also desirable.

For further information please send an email for the attention of Professor Frank Vollmer to infolsi@exeter.ac.uk
