Postdoctoral Researcher in the Economics of Migration

The Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW; www.ifw-kiel.de) seeks a
Postdoctoral Researcher
in the Economics of Migration

With support from the Mercator Foundation (www.stiftung-mercator.de), we are about to begin a three-year project to provide policy advice and conduct related academic research on the European immigration and asylum system. Together with our research partners (Migration Policy Centre at the European University Institute - www.migrationpolicycentre.eu; Centre for European Policy Studies - www.ceps.eu), we will work with policy-makers, civil society, and other stakeholders to jointly produce knowledge to support the design and implementation of innovative policies. We will adopt an economic perspective and consider all stages of the migration process, including the welfare of migrants themselves, those left behind in migrants' countries of origin, migrants' integration in their countries of destination, and international cooperation in the provision of asylum and employment opportunities. Our flagship output will be a comprehensive annual Assessment Report, with additional, smaller publication formats targeted to specific audiences. Publications in high-quality, peer-reviewed academic journals will be crucial in documenting that our policy advice is based on sound economic research.
The successful candidate will be part of a project team of five post-doctoral researchers and several PhD students distributed across the three partner institutes. The candidate will initiate and conduct research and provide policy advice within the remit of the project. At the IfW, the successful candidate will join a well-established migration research group with prominent international research partners and a steady flow of high-quality publications on migration effects in both, countries of origin and destination
(www.ifw-kiel.de/academy/armutsminderung-und-entwicklung-en-1/migration-a... language=en).
Candidates should hold (or be close to completing) a Ph.D. with a focus on migration in economics or in a closely related field (e.g. quantitative social sciences or econometrics). They should be highly familiar with relevant empirical methods, possess an excellent academic record, and have demonstrated a strong potential to publish in high-quality, refereed journals. They should be interested in developing research that helps to solve real-world problems and in communicating their findings to stakeholders. Teaching is not required, but may be arranged if the candidate is interested. The working language of the project is English; excellent English skills are therefore required. Some knowledge of German would be useful, but not essential.
The position will be based in Kiel and is initially funded for three years on a full-time basis, starting 1 June 2016; we may negotiate an earlier or later starting date. The salary will be based on the German public sector pay scale at grade EG 14 TV L.
The IfW is an equal opportunity employer and works individually with its staff to establish flexible working time schemes that allow staff members to maintain a good work-family balance and to parent their children optimally (http://www.ifw-kiel.de/about-us/equal-opportunity-at-the-kiel-institute/). We are committed to employing persons with recognized disabilities and will therefore give them preference over persons without disabilities if they are equally qualified.
Please submit your application online by 12 February 2016, including a letter of interest, CV with list of publications, one academic writing sample (if possible on a migration-related topic), and two letters of recommendation, using your family name as the file name:
