Project Description

We are advertising 1 Postdoctoral position for a term of up to three years (2+1) in the Biomedical Computing Department at Simula Research Laboratory, Norway. The position is available within the project ‘Function-driven Data Learning in High Dimension‘ (FunDaHD).

The Biomedical Computing Department performs multi-disciplinary research, driven by medical challenges with teams of experts in physical modeling, mathematics, numerical methods, scientific software development, bioengineering, medical research, and clinical treatment. The department is a driving force behind the development of the FEniCS Project (fenicsproject.org), a collaborative project for the development of innovative concepts and tools for automated scientific computing, with a particular focus on automated solution of differential equations by finite element methods.

Technological advances, such as in physical measurements, computer simulations, and storage capabilities led to vast amounts of often highly complex data sets, and this continues to grow rapidly. Despite substantial efforts to develop tools for complex data analysis, in many cases our understanding on how to extract useful information and predictive models still remains rather limited.

Motivated by the increased demand of robust predictive methods, this project aims to develop analysis techniques and numerical methods to explore new applications in tractable and robust automatic learning of functions and data structures in high dimension from the minimal number of observed samples. The performance and robustness of the constructed algorithms will be demonstrated in a variety of experiments and numerical tests with real and synthetic data. In particular, the methods will be applied to several problems in computational biomedicine, such as in cardiac modeling, and in bioinformatics, such as gene expressions.

The three-year project, funded by the Research Council of Norway as part of the FRINATEK and IKTPLUSS programs, will be conducted under the supervision of Dr. Valeriya Naumova, in closed collaboration with the research groups at Technical University Munich (Prof. Dr. M. Fornasier), Duke University (Prof. Dr. M. Maggioni), University College London (Prof. Dr. M. Pontil), University of Innsbruck (Dr. K. Schnass), and Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Grasmair).

Responsibilities

We are seeking a two-year full time postdoctoral fellow at Simula Research Laboratory to work on tractable and robust automatic learning of functions and data structures in high dimensions from the minimal amount of observed information. The successful candidate will perform rigorous theoretical analysis and develop numerical methods for manifold approximation using tools from regularization theory, sparse approximation, and machine learning. These techniques will then be applied to address real-life problems in cardiac modeling.

Following a positive evaluation the position can be extended up to three years in total.

Your Profile

We consider interested candidates who have concluded their PhD in Mathematics and a strong background in one or more of the following fields

Sparse recovery methods, functional analysis, approximation theory, probability theory, regularization theory, and familiarity with programming in Matlab, Mathematica or Python.
The candidate will also have to demonstrate an excellent level of spoken and written English, possess good interpersonal skills and show willingness to work as part of an international team.
