Postdoc in "Electrocatalysis at elevated temperature and pressure in alkaline environment"

The section Fundamental Electrochemistry within the Department of Energy Conversion and Storage pursues research in high temperature solid state electrochemistry and its activities are dedicated to develop novel characterisation techniques and materials for high temperature electrochemical cells. These cells can play an important role in the sustainable energy system of the future, e.g. as fuel and electrolysis cells, and in electrochemical reactors. Especially at elevated temperatures interfacial reactions are usually accelerated, and more complex electro catalytic processes can take place offering novel applications of those cells. A promising application is to integrate renewable electricity into chemical processes.

The advertised Postdoc position is part of a European project (TERRA) on the development of a novel electrocatalytic reactor for the synthesis of a next generation sustainable and biodegradable plastic. TERRA aims to make a step forward in this process by using a unique cell concept that enables operation at elevated temperatures and pressures in an alkaline environment. DTU Energy will contribute to this effort with its cutting edge facilities and competences for fabrication, testing and characterization of electrochemical cells.

Responsibilities and tasks
This project forms part of a broader effort to develop the catalytic electrodes for the oxidation (anode) and reduction (cathode) reaction, as well as the ceramic electrolyte supporting matrix.

As part of the project team you will be involved in the following main tasks:

Systematic electrochemical performance analysis of electrodes and catalysts at operation conditions up to 250 C and 100 bar in alkaline environment
Establishing the analytical procedures for in-line product quantification
Development and characterization of mesoporous ceramic membranes and full cells
Structural and chemical analysis of electrodes and electrolytes
Communication of results to project partners and the scientific community
Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree in Physical Chemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or equivalent.

Experience within one or more of the following areas:

Elevated pressure and temperature alkaline systems
Electrochemical characterization techniques
Analytical techniques such as High Pressure Liquid Chromatography and Gas Chromatography
Electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and other advanced structural and chemical analysis techniques
Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken
Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, to perform delicate hands-on experimental work and for self-motivation in scientific research
Ability to collaborate within a multi-national, multi-partner network and to be part of a dynamical multi-disciplinary group
We offer
We offer an interesting and challenging job in an international environment focusing on education, research, public-sector consultancy and innovation, which contribute to enhancing the economy and improving social welfare. We strive for academic excellence, collegial respect and freedom tempered by responsibility. The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is a leading technical university in northern Europe and benchmarks with the best universities in the world.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The working place will be DTU Risø Campus, Frederiksborgvej 399, Roskilde, Denmark.

The period of employment is two years with the possibility for an extension. The foreseen start date is February 15th 2016.
