PostDoc in Bioinformatics (f/m)

Leibniz-Institut für Pflanzengenetik und Kulturpflangenforschung (IPK Gatersleben)

IPK Gatersleben is a large, internationally recognized centre of plant research that addresses problems of modern biology with an emphasis on crop plants. Our international workforce integrates a broad diversity of disciplines used to elucidate the determinants of important plant properties and the mechanisms underlying processes of plant development, metabolism, and interactions with the environment. Acquired knowledge is used to contribute to the generation of genetic and biotechnological tools and to the comprehensive use of plant-genetic resources to optimize crop traits in sustainable agricultural plant production. Frequently, this involves co-operation with various national and international universities and research institutions as well as private enterprises.

For the “Department of Physiology & Cell Biology” headed by Prof. Dr. Nicolaus von Wirén we are looking for a
PostDoc in Bioinformatics (f/m)
100% up to E13 TV-L
30/05/13

Employment starting in June or July, 2013 and being financed for a period of at least 24 months with the opportunity of extension.

Several groups in the Department of Physiology & Cell Biology generate and have to deal with large sets of data derived from analytical measurements, transcript profiles or plant phenotyping (http://www.ipk-gatersleben.de/en/dept-physiology-and-cell-biology/). Scientific interpretations of large data sets often depend on thorough statistical analyses and bioinformatic processing. Our department thus realizes an increasing need to improve its competence in this area.

Your tasks:
We are looking for a Postdoc who is able to employ a broad range of bioinformatic approaches facilitating the interpretation of large data sets. The postdoc will get involved in several projects running in our department to give advice on experimental designs, support data processing and conduct network analyses. Moreover, the postdoc is expected to develop own research questions in at least one of these areas and stimulate further experimentation and concept building.

Your qualification:
You have a strong background in bioinformatics as well as in plant sciences. You should hold a Ph.D. in bioinformatics or a related subject. Experience in the statistical handling of large data sets and in applying bioinformatic tools to extract biologically relevant information or to build regulatory networks is of advantage.
You should have a great interest in plant research, be enthusiastic in solving scientific problems and a very good team player. This also requires excellent communication skills and the ability to handle several projects in parallel.

If you need further information feel free to contact Prof. Nicolaus von Wirén. You reach him under vonwiren@ipk-gatersleben.de or phone +49 (0) 39482 5602.

IPK is an equal opportunities employer. Handicapped persons will be preferred when equally qualified.

Your application:
Please send your application (incl. motivation letter, CV, methodical skills and the name and contact information for a reference) until 31st May 2013 to Ms. Gläser (application@ipk-gatersleben.de) citing the reference number 30/05/13. Please contact her also for questions regarding the application and selection procedure.
