The Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f) in oceanography/meteorology. This will be a full-time position over a period of three years. The place of employment is Geesthacht.
Background and Tasks
The position is part of the project WIPAFF (Analysis of properties and impacts of offshore wind park far fields) funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). The aim of WIPAFF is the analysis of wind and turbulence conditions in far fields of offshore wind farms, i.e., 10 to 100 km behind the wind farms. This is done in order to estimate the potential impact of large offshore wind farms on neighbouring wind farms. The project will be done in collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the University of Braunschweig, UL International GmbH (DEWI) in Wilhelmshaven, and the University of Tübingen. One component of the work at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht will be the analysis of near surface wind fields using a satellite data set of SAR (synthetic aperture radar) images acquired over the German Bight. In this area a couple of offshore windfarms are already in place and plans for additional installations exist. SAR data provide information about the small scale roughness of the ocean surface with high spatial resolution and large coverage and can thus be used to investigate the impact of offshore wind turbines on the near surface wind field at different spatial scales. Another important component in this work will be numerical models for ocean circulation, ocean waves, and atmosphere. The work will include a statistical analysis of observations and model data, as well as the development of empirical and/or physical models to characterise the observed far field effects depending on meteorological and ocean conditions. Of particular interest will be the role of atmospheric stability and ocean waves.
Requirements
you should have a strong background in physics and/or mathematics, preferably with a marine and/or meteorological orientation or with transferrable disciplinary skills
you should have experience in data analysis (e.g., spectral analysis) and computer programming (we use a UNIX/LINUX system and typically FORTRAN, MATLAB, PYTHON, etc)
although this is a German project we expect good written and oral English skills, because results will have to be presented at international conferences and in journals
